Plan your stay at The Stone Sky Hotel

Below the slate roofs of Gjirokastër, a short walk from the Old Bazaar and the climb to the castle.

The hotel's rooms

The Stone Sky Hotel has an unusually wide choice for its size: eleven room types spanning doubles, twins, triples, quadruples, family rooms and a junior suite, from 22 m² up to 39 m². What they share is the same core kit — air conditioning, soundproof walls, a private entrance, a seating area, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with shower, bidet, hairdryer and free toiletries. What separates them is size, sleeping capacity and outlook: most look onto the garden, some take in the city, and the largest adds a balcony and a hot tub. Bed configurations are listed on each card below.

Deluxe Quadruple Room — The Stone Sky Hotel
Deluxe Quadruple Room
31 m² · Garden view · Max 4 guests

  • 2 Single bed and 1 Large bed (King size)
  • Max 4 guests
  • Private entrance, seating area, soundproofing
One of the two largest four-person rooms at 31 m², and the one built around three separate sleeping surfaces rather than a suite layout. Air-conditioned, with soundproof walls, a private entrance and garden views, plus a private bathroom with shower, bidet and hairdryer.

Deluxe Double Room — The Stone Sky Hotel
Deluxe Double Room
22 m² · Garden view · Max 2 guests

  • 1 Large bed (King size)
  • Max 2 guests
  • Free toiletries, flat-screen TV, seating area
The compact deluxe double, 22 m² and fixed around a single king-size bed, so there is no twin option here. Same air conditioning, private entrance and soundproofing as the larger rooms, with garden views and a bathroom with shower and bidet.

Deluxe Double or Twin Room with City View — The Stone Sky Hotel
Deluxe Double or Twin Room with City View
24 m² · City view · Max 2 guests

  • 2 Single bed or 1 Extra-large double bed (Super-king size)
  • Max 2 guests
  • City outlook, flexible bed layout, soundproofing
The one to ask for if you want the stone city in the window rather than the garden. At 24 m² it can be set up with two singles or one super-king, which makes it equally workable for a couple or for two friends travelling together.

Superior Triple Room — The Stone Sky Hotel
Superior Triple Room
22 m² · Garden view · Max 3 guests

  • 1 Single bed and 1 Large bed (King size)
  • Max 3 guests
  • Private entrance, hairdryer, free toiletries
A three-person room in the smaller 22 m² footprint, so it is the tighter of the two triples — worth knowing if you are three adults rather than two plus a child. Everything else matches the deluxe rooms, including the private entrance and garden views.

Standard Triple Room — The Stone Sky Hotel

24 m² · Garden view · Max 3 guests

  • 1 Single bed and 1 Large bed (King size)
  • Max 3 guests
  • Seating area, soundproof walls, flat-screen TV
Two square metres larger than the Superior Triple despite the plainer label, which makes it the roomier choice for three. Same bed pairing of one single and one king, same air conditioning, private bathroom with shower and bidet, and the same quiet garden aspect.

Family Junior Suite
31 m² · Garden view · Max 4 guests

39 m² · Balcony & hot tub · Max 2 guests

  • 1 Extra-large double bed (Super-king size)
  • Max 2 guests
  • Hot tub, balcony, bathtub

Location and what to see

Getting there

The Stone Sky Hotel stands on Rruga Gjin Zenebisi, just off Rruga e Vezirit on the eastern edge of Gjirokastër's historic quarter, roughly ten minutes on foot below the Old Bazaar. There is no passenger rail service in this part of Albania, so everyone arrives by road. The nearest airport is Ioannina, across the Greek border, about 82 km by road and an hour and a half of driving, but its flight schedule is thin. Most travellers land at Tirana International Airport instead and take a direct coach south: the run to Gjirokastër takes around five hours and costs in the region of sixteen euros, with departures spread through the afternoon and evening, and it is worth booking a seat in summer. Regular buses and shared minivans also link the town with Sarandë, Berat and northern Greece, setting down in the new town below the hill. Parking at the hotel is free and needs no reservation, which counts for a lot here, because the lanes of the old town are steep, cobbled and mostly closed to through traffic.

What to see

Gjirokastër is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the reason is obvious from the first bend in the road: slate roofs, stone walls and Ottoman tower houses stacked up the hillside. Start at the Old Bazaar, the wedge of restored eighteenth-century shopfronts at the centre of the old town, then climb to the castle, one of the largest in the Balkans, open all year and home to an armaments collection and a Cold War-era American aircraft parked on its ramparts. The two great house-museums are Skënduli House, where a member of the family still shows visitors around, and Zekate House, built in 1811–1812 with twin towers and a painted upper reception room. The Ethnographic Museum fills out the picture of how these households actually worked. Beyond the town, the Blue Eye spring lies about 36 km south, roughly fifty minutes by car and an easy half-day trip. Spring and early autumn are the kindest seasons; July and August bring heat and crowds. Bring shoes with grip — the stone lanes are slippery after rain.
